Henrik Skovby, partner

Henrik Skovby has over 12 years of experience working in the development sector, and is the founding partner of Dalberg. His main focus has been corporate strategy and organisational reforms. Henrik has led more than 20 organisational reviews in the development sector based on his in-depth understanding of the multilateral development banks’ and institutions’ Finance, HR, IT and Project Management functions.

He is an advisor to several senior management teams in the international development sector and has been involved in launching several global commissions and thought leader initiatives.

Most of Henrik’s present work is dedicated strategic efforts, innovation and new services offerings for clients operating in developing countries. These activities also include establishing Dalberg’s African and Latin American practices and launching the firm’s investment related services.

Prior to Dalberg, Henrik worked as a management consultant for McKinsey & Company where his focus was financial and public institutions. Henrik began his professional career at UNDP, where he worked with project management, budget matters, and strategic positioning of the organisations. Henrik holds a Master of Public Administration degree from Harvard University and a degree in business economics from Copenhagen Business School.

Søren Peter Andreasen, partner

Søren is the co-founding partner responsible for Dalberg’s work in Europe and leads our offices in Copenhagen and Geneva. At Dalberg, Søren has served management in more than a dozen international agencies and in national governments in Europe, North America, Asia and Africa.

He focuses on organizational turnarounds and global performance improvement programmes for international public agencies as well as the expansion of private sector development initiatives. In addition to Dalberg’s client engagements, Søren is a regular contributor in the public debate on global development challenges and supports the launch of innovative initiatives in the sector.

Before joining Dalberg, Søren worked for the UN Secretariat and as a consultant with McKinsey & Company, where he advised companies in the technology, transportation and retail sectors.

Søren holds a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University and an under-graduate degree in Political Science from University of Aarhus.

Paul Callan, partner

The main focus of Paul's work has been strategic and business planning, performance management, and enabling the start-up of new development initiatives. Paul has a significant experience in design and management of educational programmes and complex change processes.

Prior to joining Dalberg, Paul worked with McKinsey & Company, where he worked with a broad range of clients including US non-profits and foundations, government agencies in Europe and the US, and large companies in the telecoms, oil & gas, and pharmaceuticals sectors.

Paul holds a PhD in Physics from Harvard University and an undergraduate degree in Theoretical Physics from Trinity College, Dublin.

James Mwangi, partner

James Mwangi is a Partner in Dalberg’s Johannesburg Office. He has served a wide range of multi-lateral organizations and private foundations on issues relating institutional change management, organizational decentralization, leveraging information technology and effective resource mobilization.

Notable examples of James’ work have included leading a comprehensive review of business processes at one of the largest UN organizations, and developing the overall business case for one of the largest management information systems implementations ever undertaken by an international organization. In Africa his work has spanned several countries including Kenya, South Africa, Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Prior to joining Dalberg, James was a consultant at McKinsey and Company where he served clients in the financial services sector and helped develop the business plan and launch strategy for a start-up e-learning venture.

James is a Kenyan citizen and he holds a degree in Economics from Harvard University. His interests include creative writing and theater and he has won national awards at the Kenya National Drama Festivals as a playwright and actor.

Sonila Cook, partner

Sonila is a Partner at Dalberg and has advised several leading multilateral organizations, government agencies and NGOs in the areas of strategic planning, organizational effectiveness, governance, and public-private partnerships. She has extensive experience across a broad range of development topics including environment and energy, humanitarian assistance, and economic development. Her work spans a broad range of clients, and her work includes the design of a number of innovative public-private partnerships on behalf of a large multilateral agency, the development of business models to engage the private sector in the phasing out of CFCs in various parts of Latin America, and reviews of oversight and performance management for several leading multilateral agencies.

Prior to joining Dalberg, Sonila worked for McKinsey & Company, where she served organisations in the financial, non-profit and media sectors. She holds an MBA from Columbia University and an undergraduate degree in Economics from Harvard University.

Daniella Ballou-Aares, partner

Daniella Ballou-Aares is a Partner in Dalberg’s New York office. She advises leading multilateral organizations, companies, foundations and NGOs in the areas of strategy, multi-sector partnerships and operational innovation. Daniella has unique sector expertise in global health, where she has advised leading players and developed initiatives to address barriers to the successful delivery of AIDS, TB and malaria products. Daniella’s engagements outside of the health sector have included designing public-private partnerships, evaluating public sector performance management systems and managing the investment due diligence for private firms in developing markets.

Prior to Dalberg, Daniella was a consultant for Bain & Company in the US, UK and South Africa, where she developed strategies for private sector firms in the financial services, health care, private equity and consumer products sectors. Daniella has also worked for the International Rescue Committee in Liberia and is a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations. Daniella holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an MPA from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a BS in Operations Research from Cornell University.

Andrew Stern, partner

Andrew leads Dalberg’s Washington DC office and many of the firm’s efforts in engaging the private sector on global issues and development initiatives. In the last year, he has advised several leading multinational corporations on sustainable development practices, as well as organizations focused on creating businesses that provide social services in emerging and developing countries. Andrew has also worked with multilateral organizations and innovative non-profit organizations on strategic planning, organizational transformation, innovations in grant-making and investment, and new program launches. He has extensive experience across several development sectors, with a particular focus on health and microfinance.

Prior to joining Dalberg, Andrew was a manager in Accenture’s Government Strategy Practice where he assisted numerous US Federal agencies and international organizations. He is also the treasurer and a director for Mothers to Mothers, an internationally recognized health program preventing HIV transmission from mothers to children. Andrew holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a BA in Economics from Princeton University.

Jonathan Berman, partner

Jonathan Berman is a Partner in Dalberg’s New York office and leads the global corporate practice.  He has more than 15 years of experience advising global corporations and governments, with a particular focus on the interaction of development and the energy, mining, infrastructure, health and financial sectors.  Jonathan has led client engagements throughout Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Latin America focusing on frontier markets and providing counsel to business unit leaders, senior corporate executives and key ministers.   

Prior to joining Dalberg, Jonathan led the corporate practice at DAI, the world’s largest private sector implementer of social and economic development programs, where his clients included several of the world’s largest pharmaceutical, energy, mining and infrastructure firms.   He is active in the Corporate Council on Africa, the Woodrow Wilson Center, and the Council on Foreign Relations, where he is a member.  Jonathan holds an MA in Political Economics from the University of California at Berkeley, and a BA from Yale.

 

Peter Tynan, associate partner

Peter Tynan is an Associate Partner in Dalberg’s Washington DC office. Peter has advised international corporations, governments and development institutions in strategy, policy, organizational change, supply chain and performance management. He has experience in several development sectors, including energy, private sector development, public sector reform, and emerging markets investment.

Prior to joining Dalberg, Peter advised the Minister of Finance in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he wrote the private sector revitalization plan and analyzed the competitiveness of major Congolese industries; and worked for the Minister of Finance in Egypt reorganizing the Egyptian Customs Authority. For the US Government, he advised the CFO of the General Services Administration (GSA) in strategy, strategic planning and organizational reform. He helped lead the reorganization of the GSA, merging the Supply Service and the Technology Service; and designed and managed the strategic planning process used across the Agency. Peter has also worked in private equity, where he sourced and evaluated middle market private equity investments.

Peter holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a Masters in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and a Bachelor in Business with First Class Honours and the University Medal from the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia. He is the co-author of Imagining Australia: Ideas For Our Future (Allen & Unwin, 2004).

Jean Hayden, chief operating officer

Jean is the Chief Operating Officer for Dalberg. She manages the global operations of the Dalberg group, as well as coordinating governance and strategic planning for the company. In addition to her operational experience, Jean has spent time working at a variety of non-profits and start-up ventures, including work designing education scholarships and business subsidies while on a corporate fellowship at the Cape York Institute of Australia.

Prior to joining Dalberg, Jean was Projects Director for the COO of Columbia Science and Technology Ventures in New York where she was responsible for leading initiatives to introduce professional operating systems into a growing organization. In addition, she has nearly 6 years of prior experience at the Boston Consulting group where she led teams on strategic and operational projects in New York, Melbourne, Sydney, Boston and Toronto.

Jean holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, as well as a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Laws (1st class) from the Australian National University in Canberra, Australia.

Edwin Macharia, associate partner

Edwin Macharia is an Associate Partner in Dalberg’s Africa office, based in Nairobi, Kenya. He advices developing country governments, bi-lateral and multi-lateral donors, international organizations, foundations, NGOs and corporations on a range of issues including strategy, operational efficiency and programmatic implementation.

Edwin possesses a deep understanding of development issues, given his tenure at the Clinton Foundation where he held multiple roles focused on rural communities. As Director of Agriculture, he led the Foundation’s thinking, operations and partnership-building in the agriculture space for a $100M initiative focused on effecting holistic development at the grassroots. Before that, Edwin was Director of the Rural Initiative for the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative, charged with developing and supporting execution of programs that extend HIV/AIDS care and treatment services to low level heath facilities (health centers and dispensaries) across partner countries.

Prior to joining the Clinton Foundation, Edwin was a management consultant at McKinsey and Company where he served clients in the financial services and pharmaceuticals sectors. Edwin holds a degree in Biology from Amherst College.

Wijnand de Wit, associate partner

Wijnand de Wit is an associate partner in Dalberg’s Geneva office. He advises international organizations, corporations, developing and developed country governments, foundations and NGOs in the areas of strategic planning, organizational transformation, financial management and performance management. He has extensive experience with several areas in development, including Global Health, Technology and International Trade.

Before joining Dalberg, Wijnand worked with KPMG Consulting in the Netherlands as a senior consultant focused on financial management in the public and private sector. He has advised several large public sector organizations, including the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Infrastructure, on the implementation of enterprise resource planning applications and on the implementation of Results Based Management.

Wijnand holds an MBA from Nyenrode University, a Bachelor degree in Engineering and is a Certified Management Accountant.
